After reading Curly Girl: The Handbook
, I decided to try it. It’s a hair care method that involves not using shampoo or a brush among other things. I took pictures and kept track of what my hair felt and looked like. My review of the book will go up on my blog soon so in the meantime enjoy these pics and descriptions :)
Day 1-

I wasn’t brave enough to go completely without shampoo at first, so I used less than a dime sized amount on Thursday. By Friday, my scalp was itching like mad. And my hair looked like a big frizz ball. This is going to be an adjustment. My hair has volume, I’ll give you that.
Day 2-

Last night I spent hours at Wal-mart looking for a conditioner by reading a bazillion ingredient lists trying to find one that was actually good for my hair based on the requirements in the Curly Girl handbook. I found exactly one brand that met all the requirements - L’Oreal. The conditioner cost $6 for only 8 oz of it. Oh my gosh. It smells heavenly I’ll tell you what. There’s an exfoliant recipe in the book to exfoliate your scalp when it gets itchy, and my scalp feels 10 X better. I think it even feels better than it usually does. There’s no frizz and it’s all happy and bouncy. It looks weighed down a little because I think I used too much conditioner. But it’s still dang cute!
Day 3-
I washed my hair with conditioner again because my curls had gotten all flat from sleeping on them all night (plus my scalp was a little itchy). I’m noticing that air-drying my curls is kinda leaving them a little flat without much volume, but I’m going to give it a few weeks before I experiment some more.
Day 4-
My sister asked me if my hair was greasy since I’m washing my hair with conditioner instead of shampoo. It doesn’t look greasy to me - what do you think? I didn’t wet it at all today. This is what my hair looked like when I woke up this morning. It’s not greasy but it doesn’t look quite normal either….
Day 5-
I have more volume today! I used the diffuser last night. I like not brushing my hair. Combing my fingers through my hair in the shower when the conditioner is in gets out all the tangles. My husband
said my hair feels like rope. Ew. I hope it’s just dirty from all the wind and sand when I was at the lake today.
Day 6-
It’s got the half-curly half-messy thing going on.
Day 7-
It can’t look cute every day. At least it’s not so frizzy.
Day 8-
Look! I finally achieved volume AND cute curls. I washed my hair upside down. I figured if the water pressure could flatten my hair that much, I could use that power for good! It’s not to hard to rinse my hair upside down because my shower has a hand wand thingey.
Day 12 -
I think I’m out of the woods now. I had some doubts that this was going to make my hair look so bad, but I’m starting to love my natural curls. The routine is super easy and fast - only about 10 minutes to do it. I use sulfate free shampoo now instead of conditioner to wash my hair.
4 Months -

Wow look how long my hair grew! I don’t diffuse my hair at all. I always let it air dry. I might try diffusing it - we’ll see. I basically love the way my hair looks now.
